Vintage Mid-Century Modern Full Dining Room Set from the 1950s. My grandparents were the original owners of this furniture (see my grandfather in the old photo with the dining set. By the way, that blue dot is only on the photograph, not the furniture!). If you love the work of Hans Wegner, this dining room set is a real treasure for you! Mr. Wegner is known for saying, "A chair is to have no backside. It should be beautiful from all sides and angles." So true. Look at the clean, simple lines in this furniture. It is a timeless delight. Mr. Wegner did not create this dining set, but it echoes his love of the same design philosophy. Since these pieces have only been moved once, it has minimum imperfections for its age. Early 1950's Champagne Blonde finish. This one-owner dining set includes matching: * A rectangular table * One table leaf * Four chairs * China cabinet / hutch with two glass sliding doors on top -- great for displaying your favorite china or collectibles! * Buffet server / sideboard / credenza with lots of storage inside with drawers & doors -- perfect for table linens, serving pieces, seasonal decor, etc. * A thick cushioned table pad *** FREE DELIVERY within an hour of Baltimore, Md. *** Other shipping options are the buyer's responsibility. If you are further away, I would be willing to meet you half-way or make the full trip for a reasonable additional cost. This dining set, along with many other fine antiques and vintage treasures, can be see at a local antique store in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. The store is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. I recently established rental space here to sell my items and it's the most wonderful antique store! Or, if you can not make it during those hours, just contact me and we can set up another time for you to see the furniture. For this dining room set, all pieces match and are from the original set. It is exceedingly rare to find a set of this age with all of its components still together, but since this is a one-owner suite, it has stayed intact all these years. Its design is quintessential mid-century, with rectangular table, tapered legs, and overall angular lines. We believe the wood, although unmarked, to be mahogany, in a “honey” finish that lets the beautiful grain show through. This is a moderately sized and scaled set, to fit in all sizes of dining rooms. The table without the leaf measures 54 x 38.5 inches Although the chairs do not need reupholstering, you may wish to do so to match yourdécor. It is very simple to re-cover the chairs; you only need a stapler and some material. They were re-covered in the past few years with a tapestry fabric. We are disappointed to part with this great dining room set, but, sadly, have no room for it and would love to see it enjoyed by another family for as many years as our family did. Please e-mail any questions you have about this wonderful furniture! If the dining set does not sell at this auction, I will continue to advertise it locally on Craigs List and possibly consign it with a Baltimore antique shop. Thanks! ________ About Mid-Century Modern Mid-Century modern is an architectural, interior and product design form that generally describes post-war developments in modern design from roughly 1945 to 1965. Mid-century architecture was a further development of Frank Lloyd Wright's principles of organic architecture combined with many elements reflected in the International and Bauhaus movements. Mid-century modernism, however, was much more organic in form and less formal than the International Style. Scandinavian designers and architects were very influential at this time, with a style characterized by simplicity, democratic design and natural shapes. Like many of Wright's designs, Mid-Century architecture was frequently employed in residential structures with the goal of bringing modernism into America's post-war suburbs. This style emphasized creating structures with ample windows and open floor-plans with the intention of opening up interior spaces and bringing the outdoors in. Many Mid-century homes utilized then groundbreaking post and beam architectural design that eliminated bulky support walls in favor of walls seemingly made of glass. Function was as important as form in Mid-Century designs with an emphasis placed specifically on targeting the needs of the average American family. Examples of residential Mid-Century modern architecture are frequently referred to as the California Modern style. Although I do not know the maker of my grandparents' furniture, it has a great simple elegance seen by the well-known designers of the mid-century modern era, as mentioned by Wikipedia (listed below). Florence Knoll Bassett also had great style in this era. I also have a vintage bedroom set in a darker cappuccino wood that has the modern design. If interested e-mail me to request pictures. If you are looking for any Danish or modern accessories, please let me know. We have family in Norway and they always sent us the most interesting gifts from long ago.
