Title: NdebeleBeaded Toy Rifle South Africa Type of Object: Toy or Folk Art Ethnic Group:Ndebele Country of Origin: South Africa Materials: beads, wood, button, brass bells Approximate Age: 1960s-1980s Dimensions: Rifle 13.5 inches Overall Condition: Very good. Most of our pieces have spent decades on at least two continents, and have been treasured by several owners. Small splits, scrapes and cracks are a normal part of their patina attesting to their age and extensive use. We examine each piece carefully when we receive it and report any damage we find in our listings. Please look carefully at the pictures which may also reveal condition and damage. Damage, Repair: A few loose strands with missing beads Provenance: From the Collection of Peter Nelson, who was a Peace Corps volunteer, collector, and dealer. These pieces were collected in the 1970s and very early 1980s. This piece is from his personal collection. Additional Information: beaded toy depicting a gun or rifle with strap. The rifle is made out of wood and entirely decorated with tiny white glass beads and a few other beads in green, red, blue, yellow, and gold. Gun toys were very popular in the 1960s in South Africa because of the apartheid. The conception of such pieces belong to a contemporary trend of art in South Africa using beads as the main decorative element. Beadworks such as this are made for sale. Today women working with beads have discovered another way to make their work more lucrative. They sculpt figures representing people, animal, everyday objects including toys such as this, a combination of subjects and complex scenes, etc. Multiple color beads are used as decorative elements. The sculptures are made of different medium. Many of them are used for sale. It is interesting to note that most of the bead sculptors are females. They essentially make these bead sculptures for sale in big cities such as Durban and Johannesburg. It has to be noted that the African Art Center in Durban, especially, has played an important role in the emerging of this art in stimulating local artists. Each sculptor has her own style and some preferences when it comes to the subjects or scene to depict. I have examined this piece and agree with the description.
